One way to make sure no one’s wearing the same prom dress as you is to make it yourself and if you make it out of duct tape? It can win you a scholarship, too. That’s what happened to Larissa Leon and her unique creation won Duck Brand’s 21st annual Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest. The 17-year-old from Sunnyside, Washington, designed and made a colorful gown inspired by Folklorico dresses used in traditional Mexican dances and every detail was made using duct tape.
- Larissa’s dress was made with 47 rolls of Duck Brand tape, which she used to create the striped ribboning, embroidered flowers, flowy sleeves and intricate lacework.
- She also made a matching purse, flower crown, earrings, and shoes – all using duct tape. Her dress weighs about 20 pounds and the teen says the whole look took her 163 hours to put together.
But in the end, the stunning design and her hard work paid off, as she won Duck Brand’s grand prize for “Best Dress” – a $10-thousand scholarship. “I knew that I wanted to do something really big, something very colorful, not only a dress I wanted it to represent me,” Larissa says. “So, with that, I took a lot of inspiration from my Mexican culture with folkloric dance and those types of dresses.”
- The world has now seen that she has serious fashion skills with duct tape, but this teen hopes to attend the University of Washington or the University of California, Los Angeles after her final year of high school and pursue her dream of becoming a dermatologist.
