Struggling to find space for all the new toys your kids unwrapped this holiday? You’re definitely not alone. Now that we’ve cleaned up the wrapping paper and we’re starting to put gifts away, many moms and dads are getting stressed out while trying to make room for the new toys their kids got. And these ideas can help get that toy situation under control.

  • Get rid of anything you’d trash – We’re talking puzzles that are missing pieces, toys that are broken beyond repair and practically empty art supplies. Start with sorting and organizing all that to make room for the new arrivals.
  • Do a toy cleanout alone – Before you get the kids involved in helping you, take a pass at their toys by yourself. YOU know what needs to go, so do it without them around first and then let them contribute to the effort.
  • Then, get the kids involved – Let them find some gently pre-loved toys to donate to other children so they get in on the spirit of giving.
  • Create a rotating toy system – This means only a certain number of toys stay out for them to play with at a time and the rest get packed away. Then you swap them out every so often and the toys stay fresh and appealing.
  • Rethink the layout – Changing the way your child’s room is set up could create more space for toys. Move the furniture around and reorganize the toy box or shelves to hold more.
  • Put away toys they’ve outgrown, but still love – Toys that hold sentimental value to your kids or you can be packed up for storage, that way they’re safe and will be around later when the kids are old enough to appreciate the memories.
