Christmas is celebrated around the world, but have you ever wondered about their holiday traditions? Here are some of the most interesting international Christmas traditions:

  • In Japan, they go to KFC. Christmas Eve is the company’s biggest day there.
  • Danish Christmas: Party All Day With Julefrokost. The word literally means Christmas lunch. Christmas Eve is when they go all out, including having a buffet spread and eating throughout the day while drinking Aquavit (booze) and having a White Elephant exchange.
  • Venezuelan Christmas: Since it’s warm there, the tradition is to strap on roller skates and head to church. Then to just skate around in big groups.
  • Germany and Austria: The deal with Krampus. He is the opposite of Santa Claus. Krampus, a folkloric figure whose legend is shared every Christmas season, strikes fear into the hearts of children (and probably some adults, too). Krampus purportedly has horns, fangs, and a long tongue, standing in direct opposition to Santa’s jolly kindness. He drags naughty kids to the underworld.
  • In China there’s a new tradition: the peace apple. The Peace Apple is when you put an apple in a festive box and give it to someone. Boyfriends tend to gift them to girlfriends. They put you in someone’s good graces.
