In the world of dating today, it’s not uncommon to match with someone on a dating app and go out with them without really knowing much about them. If you’ve ever been on a blind date, you’ve probably done a little Facebook detective work to check out who they are before you meet up in person and that can tell you a little about them. But one woman is encouraging singles to do some Internet research before going on a date with a stranger after her own experience.
TikToker Shaina Kay Cardwell posted a video explaining she was planning to meet a man she matched with online, but she cancelled immediately after Googling him. Luckily, after swiping right, she decided to search for her date’s name and that’s when she discovered he had previously been arrested … for aggravated kidnapping. And she wouldn’t ever have known about it if she didn’t check him out first.
While it may feel a little weird to do your own version of a background check before going out with someone new, you never know what someone could be hiding, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry. People commenting on Shaina’s video prove this point by sharing their own concerning dating stories:
- “A guy who begged me to date him and I turned down but Googled him later only to find out he was arrested for attacking a UPS worker at his house,” one user writes.
- “I straight up asked a guy what would happen if I Googled him,” another explains, “And he told me I wouldn’t like it. Actual sexual assault accusations.”
- “My friend Googled him after the date,” comments another. “He had an assault charge for killing his ex’s chihuahua and beating her with the dead dog. Google first.”
If you’re not AT LEAST doing a social media rundown before going out with a stranger, you’re playing with fire!
