In the world of fashion, everything comes and goes in cycles and what was once cool may not be anymore. As 2021 is wrapping up, professional stylists are sharing the trends they think are on the way out. These are the clothes and accessories the fashion experts suggest you won’t need in your wardrobe next year.
- Plain leggings – Sorry to break it to you, but this comfortable clothing staple we all wear is not in style anymore. “Plain leggings are on the decline,” says personal stylist Lana Blanc. Hold on to them for workouts and lounging, but if you’re heading to brunch, she recommends “a unitard or a split-seam legging instead.”
- Full baggy outfits – Oversized garments and comfort-first styles have been popular in 2021, but stylist and model Tara Dupuis says they’ll be replaced by more structured and fitted styles in the coming year. If you’re not ready to let the comfy clothes go just yet, try mixing and matching looser items with fitted ones, like wide-leg pants with a body-skimming sweater.
- Skinny jeans – We’ve heard this before and didn’t want to believe it, but Blanc calls skinny jeans the top item to ditch from your wardrobe. “Skinny jeans are definitely dead,” she explains, adding that there are a wide range of looser, on-trend denim styles out there to choose from.
- Cold-shoulder tops – They had their moment and many women still love wearing them, but Dupuis says the trend is “simply starting to feel a little bit tired.”
- Chunky sneakers – The “dad sneaker” trend has been around for a while and these fashion experts say it’s finally on the way out and will be replaced by chic mules or slimmer, sleeker leather sneakers in 2022.
- Retro bucket hats – This 1990s fashion staple made a comeback, but it’s days are numbered. Personal stylist Leigh Williams recommends skipping the bucket hat and going with a classic baseball cap instead.
Here’s the deal: Wear what you feel good in. Individual and person style exists outside the fashion cycle.
