Matthew McConaughey choked back tears as he made a strong pitch for new gun safety regulations after the deadly mass shooting in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas.

After speaking with lawmakers Monday evening, McConaughey met with President Biden at the White House yesterday. Stepping up to the podium, McConaughey was clear that “this time, it seems something is different.” In his 20-minutes of remarks, he got personal – and passionate.

“These are reasonable, practical, tactical regulations to our nation, states, communities, schools and homes,” he said. “Responsible gun owners are fed up with the Second Amendment being abused and hijacked by some deranged individuals. These regulations are not a step back – they’re a step forward for a civil society and, and the Second Amendment.” He didn’t take questions after his remarks.

McConaughey’s appearance comes as survivors and relatives of people who were killed in Uvalde and last month’s mass shooting in Buffalo, New York are set to testify before the House Oversight Committee this morning. Among those set to testify is eleven-year-old Miah Cerillo, the fourth-grader who smeared herself with blood from a friend killed in the shooting and played dead. She’ll be the youngest person to ever address Congress in such a way.
