Bartenders Share Golden Rules Of Bourbon

No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start an appreciation for good bourbon. For those who want to branch out, or those who want to get a little more educated on the spirit, Tim Knittel of The Kentucky Castle gives us these “Golden Rules of Bourbon.”

  • There’s more to bourbon than Pappy Van Winkle. Not all great bourbons will break your bank account, and price isn’t always a sign of quality.
  • Use the “Kentucky Chew” when you sip. “Roll the bourbon in your mouth three or four times really coating your tongue before you swallow.”
  • Adding “two or three drops of water” will “open” the bourbon and “release much of the trapped aromatics and complex flavors.”
  • Bourbon is a “fantastic cocktail base,” but if you want to look like a local in the world of Kentucky bourbon…never order a mint julep.
